Apple WWDC 2019 Keynote Summary

Apple WWDC 2019 Keynote Summary

Every year Apple hosts an event called the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC for short). Probably not a single person reading this is an App Developer, so why should the rest of us care?

Well… the first event in the Conference, the Keynote address, always gives us tons of information and demonstrations about what new features we will all be getting in the next version of the macOS (that runs all Macs), iOS (which runs iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches), watchOS and the tvOS. And so, even if you are not the least bit curious and can wait until the fall to find out what these features are, this event will remain the best place to learn about these new features.

Apple TV – tvOS
More personal and more entertaining than ever. New home screen. New control center. Customize it for multiple users. Apple music now has lyrics in sync with the music. Games now work with Xbox One S and Playstation Dual Shock 4 game contollers. New underwater screensavers.  The video presentation starts at 8:25.

Apple Watch – watchOS 6
Activity trends. Cycle tracking. Hearing health innovations. The App Store on your wrist. With watchOS 6, you get the insights you need to stay healthy and fit. Software updates will be able to happen directly to the watch, no longer depending on the iPhone to deliver it. The video presentation starts at 11:42.

An outline of the new WatchOS 6 features can be found HERE.

iPhone & iPad – iOS 13
iOS 13 introduces a bold new look, major updates to the apps you use every day, new ways to help you protect your privacy, and improvements across the entire system that make your iPhone & iPad even faster and more delightful to use. The video presentaion starts at 26:43.

An outline of major features of iOS 13 can be found HERE. A FULL list of features can be found HERE.

iPad – iPadOS
While built on the same foundation as iOS, iPad has become a truly distinct experience. With powerful apps designed for a large Multi‑Touch display. Multitasking made simple with intuitive gestures. And the ability to drag and drop a file with a fingertip. It’s always been magical. And now it’s called iPadOS. The video presentaion starts at 1:02:04.

macOS Catalina gives you more of everything you love about Mac. Experience music, TV, and podcasts in three all-new Mac apps. Enjoy your favorite iPad apps now on your Mac. Extend your workspace and expand your creativity with iPad and Apple Pencil. And discover smart new features in the apps you use every day. Now you can take everything you do above and beyond. The video presentation starts at 1:42:40.

Home Automation – HomeKit
Technically, this was a part of the iOS 13 presentation, but we think this is important enough to mention separately. Here, Apple announces a new HomeKit feature called HomeKit Secure Video, which is designed to offer up a better, more secure way to manage the footage captured by in-home security cameras. Apple also announced HomeKit enabled routers, which will provide further protection for your smart devices. A nice summary of the announcement can be found at this MacRumors article.   Starts at 42:42.
iPhone, iPad, Mac – Accessibility: Voice Control
This presentation was included in the Mac part of the keynote, but apparently “accessibility” is going to take huge leaps forward on both Mac, iPad and iPhone. Take a few minutes and watch this. Truly impressive.

The video presentation starts at 1:48:54.

This might not seem like it applies to you, but the things that are presented here represent changes that we’ll be seeing in the kinds of apps that will be available to all of us in the near future as the developers beging to implement these things into their apps.

The video presentation starts at 1:58:44.

Mac – New Mac Pro
Finally, we need to at least mention the long awaited new Mac Pro. From Apple’s Mac Pro page: “Power to change everything. Say hello to a Mac that is extreme in every way (our note: including price). With the greatest performance, expansion, and configurability yet, it is a system created to let a wide range of professionals push the limits of what is possible.”

The video presentation starts at 1:17:24.
